“Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed."
UNESCO’s main purpose is to contribute to peace and safety in the world, by promoting collaboration among nations through education, science, culture and communication. UNESCO’s youth section, which
is in charge of coordinating activities to Young people, recognizes
the fundamental role the youth plays on achieving this organization’s
goals. One of its most important events is the Biannual Youth Forum:
2003 Youth Forum was held from September 26th to 28th, 2003 at UNESCO’s
site in Paris, France. The Forum is constituted by a unique platform,
which makes it possible to listen to opinions of young people from
all around the world and it is part of the organization’s
General Conference.
The theme of 2003 Forum: “UNESCO
and the Youth: a mutual commitment”, reflects UNESCO’s
hope to develop programs for the youth and to negotiate cooperative
agreements to actively support initiatives undertaken by the youth
themselves. Delegates from 104 member countries debated themes of
critical importance for the youth:
Education for the Sustainable Development – emphasizing the
universal need for fresh water.
